Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is an airport that serves Hyderabad, which is located in Shamshabad. The airport is about 24 kilometers to the south of Hyderabad. As it is over 5,500 acres, it is the largest airport in India by area.

Shamshabad Airport's opening day was on 23 March 2008 to replace the Begumpet Airport.

The airport has

Structure of the Rajiv Gandhi Airport

The airport is over a big area of 2,200 hectares, of which 810 hectares are developed towards airport needs, and the remaining area is there for the expansion of the airport. It is the 4th busy airport in India, and it has handled 25 million passengers and 150,000 tonnes of cargo. The airport has a big passenger terminal, 2 major runways, and 1 big cargo terminal.

Runways in Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

The airport has two big runways:

  • Runway 09R/27L which is 13,980 ft × 200 ft
  • Runway 09L/27R which is 12,162 ft × 148 ft

Runway 09R/27L is the original runway, and it is long enough to receive the Airbus A380, which is the world's biggest passenger aircraft.

There are 3 parking aprons to the north of these runways:

  • The cargo
  • Passenger terminal and
  • MRO aprons.

The passenger terminal apron has parking on the north side and south side of the terminal. It can handle 12 million passengers over 1,260,000 sq ft. The terminal has 10 baggage claim belts, of which 7 terminals are there for domestic flights and 3 terminals are there for international flights.

The terminal was expanded towards the east in November 2023, and the operational area is 2,950,580 sq ft. Now, the passenger capacity is increased to 40 million passengers per annum.

The expanded area has

  • 56 bus domestic departure gates
  • Arrival facilities
  • 44 passenger boarding aero bridges
  • Contact stands
  • A domestic-to-domestic (D-D) transfer area
  • 3 ATRS machines
  • 1 screening machine and
  • 12 departure gates.

After the expansion of the terminal, there are 20 immigration counters and 87 check-in desks. There are 14 kiosks for self-check-in. There are 10 Baggage Claim Belts with 840 meters.

After the airport, Shamshabad started to grow fast in terms of connectivity and social infrastructure. Real estate development also started to grow and a lot of projects started to develop.
